Wei Wei is one of the most popular and esteemed female popsingers of China. "At least 800 million of China's 1.2 billion people know me", she said proudly.Born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia (Neimenggu), Wei Wei grew up in Liuzhou in the southwesternprovince of Guangxi. While in kindergarten, she was chosen to join shows exalting the CulturalRevolution. That let her opportunities to practice ballet and perform in public. Her singing career took off in 1986 after winning the National Young Singers contest on Chinese television.Wei Wei recorded what is considered to be the national anthem of the Asia and also one of her masterpieces, "Our Asia" (Wo Men Ya Zhou), which was written for the 11thAsian Games held in Beijing in 1990.Wei Wei speaks fluent English , with an American accent. Her band includes musicians from Sweden, France, the U.S. and China. She spends half her time in Beijing and the rest in Atlanta with Michael Smith, whom she met in 1993 and later married. "The U.S. gives me higher creativity and proximity to the international market," she says.
